Last week saw a major turn of events in the data privacy sector. From the Austrian data protection authorities ruling that using Google Analytics on a website is prohibited under the GDPR to Facebook launching a new website that provides easy access to its data usage policies, and notes on how business users can protect, and respect, their audience’s information.

Austria’s DPA ruled that Google Analytics on a website is prohibited under the GDPR and here’s the story behind it. The decision raises a major red flag over the routine use of tools that require transferring Europeans’ personal data to the US for processing, as the watchdog determined that IP addresses and identifiers in cookie data are personal data of site visitors, bringing these transfers under EU data protection law.

An IP address “anonymization” mechanism on the website had not been correctly implemented in this situation. Regardless of that technological quirk, the regulator determined that IP address data constituted personal data since it may be integrated with other digital data to identify a visitor, much like a “puzzle piece.”

The Austrian DPA verdict makes it obvious that Google’s existing set of security measures, which pertain to how it uses Google Analytics, are insufficient because they do not eliminate the potential of surveillance agencies gaining access to people’s data.

Apart from that, Facebook’s New Privacy & Data Hub hit the headlines last week!

To mark Data Privacy Day this week, Facebook has launched a new website that provides easy access to its data usage policies, and notes on how business users can protect, and respect, their audience’s information. Along with the new Privacy Hub, Facebook will also prompt users to check their personal privacy settings over the next two weeks with a reminder in your News Feed.

With the Cambridge Analytica scandal exposing many users to the possible ramifications of what they publish on Facebook and other social networks, and how it might be used to control your thinking, data privacy has become a much bigger concern in the previous twelve months.
